The Second National Forum on the Textile and Clothing Sector of Tajikistan

Second National Forum of Entrepreneurs of Textile and Garment EnterprisesOn September 25, 2020, Dushanbe hosted the Second National Forum of Entrepreneurs of Textile and Garment Enterprises – members of the Union of Private Sector Development of Tajikistan (UPSDT) on the “Processing of domestic cotton fiber into the final competitive export and import-substituting products, development of the spinning, weaving, dyeing and garment industries as a priority direction of the industrialization of the economy of Tajikistan”. The event was organized by the Union of Private Sector Development of Tajikistan (UPSDT) in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Tajikistan and the International Trade Centre (ITC)’s Global Textile and Clothing Program funded by the Government of Switzerland.

Entrepreneurs and representatives of the business structures, enterprises of the textile and clothing sector – members of the Union, from various regions of the country, representatives of relevant government agencies, ministries and departments, international development partners, gathered together to discuss development issues of the textile and clothing sector in the country. The forum participants were introduced with the current situation in the sector and state programs on developing the full processing of the cotton fiber to the final product, as well as the development of the spinning, weaving, knitted garment industries, the current state of enterprises, the use of existing production facilities, the quality and pricing of manufactured products and their impact on the competitiveness of enterprises both domestically and on the international market, the demand of the labor market and the quality of training qualified personnel for the industry.

“The whole country, and the business is not exclusion, is going through a difficult year now. Despite the challenges, most of our companies were able to adapt to new realities and new requirements of the textile market and launch the production of masks and protective suits. The companies were able to meet the local market demands to the extent necessary and thereby supported the state and society in difficult times”.

“At the same time, it must be said that due to the closure of borders throughout the region, companies faced number of challenges, such as lack of equipment and spare parts, delays with the dispatch of goods at the borders, decreased volume of sales and orders, and etc. As a result, some companies had to lay staff off, and some even temporarily suspended their activities. In general, the situation has shown how necessary it is to introduce the use of latest online technologies in the sector, with which we are ready to provide assistance and are already taking measures in cooperation with the private sector, the UPSDT, and our government partners”.

At the Forum, a competition on the best enterprise in the industry, organized by the UPSDT and the Republican Committee of Trade Unions of the Textile Enterprise and Light Industry of the Republic of Tajikistan, in three nominations, was concluded.

Winners in all nominations

Best exporting company and best export production in the sector: JV “Giavoni” (Khujand) and “Satn” Ltd. (Khujand) – both final processing of the cotton fiber; “Vahdat – Textile” Ltd. (Dushanbe), a hosiery producer; and “Rahimov A.A.” Ltd. (Khujand) – a weaving and spinning mill

Best schoolwear producer: “Husniya B” (Jabbor Rasulov district); “Kota Global” (Bokhtar); “Mastura Avezova” (Qubodiyon); “Olimkhoni Khujandi” (Khujand)

The winners were awarded with the Cup (Badge of Honor), and the UPSDT Diplomas of I, II, III degrees.

At the forum, the UPSDT members adopted an appeal to all workers of textile and clothing enterprises and heads of relevant ministries and departments. The forum participants came to the conclusion that only in the case of creating a favorable business environment, increasing the level of legal, economic, and professional knowledge of entrepreneurs, removing barriers to the development of trade, training qualified engineers and workers of key specialties, efficient use of existing production facilities, ensuring the competitiveness of manufactured products in the domestic and foreign markets, the development of the country’s textile and clothing industry, as well as assistance in achieving the goal of ensuring the final processing of domestic cotton fiber into competitive export and import-substituting products.

The Private Sector Development Union of Tajikistan, in partnership with the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies and other relevant ministries and departments, as well as the International Trade Center (ITC), will provide efforts to contribute to the country’s textile and clothing industry.
