Two Catalan clusters create a mask that allows to maintain the sense of smell. It is made of knitted fabric, has a high filtration efficiency and at the same time greater breathability, and has European certification

The Catalan Fashion Cluster MODACC and the Beauty Cluster, in collaboration with the Foundation for Textile Innovation FITEX, have just launched the “Smellmask” mask on the market, a reusable hygienic mask made of knitted fabric that, thanks to its greater breathability, allows you to perceive odors much better than usual hygienic masks.

The perfumery sector, through the Beauty Cluster, had confirmed for some time that the use of the mask implied a reduction in the sense of smell, a fact that could end up harming innovation and the economy of the sector. For its part, the Modacc Cluster already developed last year, together with FITEX, the Fitmasc; An ergonomic, washable and reusable hygienic protection mask that has a certified inner fabric that acts as a bacterial filter and provides greater breathability than fabric masks. From this experience they have jointly devised the “SmellMask” mask, which has now been put on sale.

The new mask has a filtration efficiency of 91.4% before washing and 90.38% after 20 washes (European regulations indicate that the filtration efficiency must be greater than 70% for hygienic masks), and in As for its most distinctive feature, it has a breathability of 18 Pa / cm2 before washing and 20 Pa / cm2 after 20 washes (the European standard indicates that breathability must be less than 60 Pa / cm2). The exterior composition is 100% antibacterial polyamide, and the interior filter composition is 80% Polyester and 20% Polyamide. Thanks to the filter inside, the face mask has passed the 2020 European tests for bacterial filtration and breathability.

To analyze in detail the olfactory advantages of the mask, the Beauty Cluster has carried out a comparative analysis using the BAST-24 system (Barcelona Smell Test) directed by Dr. Josep de Haro, an internationally renowned specialist in sensory sciences. The results have clearly shown the best user experience over fabric masks. In addition, the Beauty Cluster has put mask testing units at the disposal of expert perfumers and the result has been very satisfactory by the leading experts in the olfactory industry.

According to Ivan Borrego, general director of the Beauty Cluster: “The Smellmask is the mask that perfumery and cosmetic professionals have been waiting for. It allows us to continue our professional work feeling protected and without losing the ability to detect odors, recognize them and enjoy the sense of smell ”.

David García, general director of the Catalan Fashion Cluster (MODACC) adds: “The manufacturing method, the materials used and compliance with the criteria set out in the Spanish standard UNE0065 on reusable hygienic masks and the applicable European standards guarantee protection , extraordinary adaptability and comfort for the user “.

The SmellMask mask is for sale through www.087locallab.com, an e-commerce platform that offers innovative and quality products manufactured by the textile and fashion industries of Catalonia with the collaboration and technical advice of the FITEX technology center.
