In a question asked by Shri Rudra Narayan Pany, in Rajya Sabha on December 21, the Minister of State in the MoT, Smt. Panabaaka Lakshmi, gave the following information :
As per the records, 555 cotton/man-made fibre textile mills (Non-SSI) having 297473 workers were closed in the country including Mumbai, Kanpur, Surat and Ujjain as on 31.10.2011. Among the states which witnessed closures of textiles units, Tamil Nadu topped the list registering closure of 168 units, followed by Maharashtra 60, Uttar Pradesh 50 and Haryana 46, Lakshmi said.
To another query, she said, “Based on the industry representations of slowdown in the textiles industry, the government is considering restructuring proposal for the sector”.
