Eco-Friendly, Leather-like Textile
Gelatex is the first eco-friendly leather-like material that is 100% non-toxic, made of waste and is easily
scalable. It is made from gelatin nanofibers by up-cycling meat industry waste, an abundant and under-
valued resource. It is a unique material, different from any other, but closest to suede or leather.
Sustainable Textile: Gelatex textile is a unique eco-friendly ma-
terial for fashion and interior design. It is 100% non-toxic mate-
rial, made of waste and comes in rolls. It feels a bit like suede or
leather but yet, is different from any other material. It’s Gelatex.
According to Fonseca, the company expects to achieve revenues of EUR 10 million in just 3 years.
Furthermore, with plans to expand production facilities and a possible licensing model, there is a potential
to generate EUR 2 billion within a decade. “The project played an important role in bringing the first easily
scalable, eco-friendly leather-like textile to market,” she notes.
The company is now busy constructing a pilot line, looking at options for launching a large-scale industrial
line, and securing all necessary certifications and patents.
