Recent Developments in Fibre Materials Research in Australia

Abstract

In this presentation, I have presented an overview of recent developments in fibre related research in Australia. This includes fabrication of fibrous materials in multiple dimensions, including zero dimension ultrafine powders, one dimension nanofibres and yarns, and three dimension fibrous structures. I will introduce the new Australian Future Fibres Research and Innovation Centre (AFFRIC) and the associated Australian Carbon Fibre Research Facility (ACFRF).

Professor Wang heads the fibre research program at Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM). In 2010, Deakin was awarded a $37 million grant under the federal government’s Education Investment Fund (EIF), to establish the Australian Future Fibres Research and Innovation Centre (AFFRIC), in collaboration with CSIRO MSE and Victorian Centre for Advanced Materials Manufacturing. He is the 2005 recipient of Fiber Society (based in US) Distinguished Achievement Award. In 2006, he was named the Alfred Deakin Professor, the highest Honour that Deakin University can bestow on a member of staff, in recognition of his outstanding and sustained contribution to research at Deakin University. Between 2008 and 2011, Professor Wang was the director for Deakin’s Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation, now known as the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM).

Deakin received the highest ranking score of 5 in Materials Engineering, in the recent national report on Excellence in Research for Australia.

Professor Wang is a State Appointed Expert at Wuhan Textile University, under the One Thousand Talents Program. He also serves on the Governing Council of the Fiber Society (US), and on the editorial board of 5 international research journals. Professor Wang has over 300 research publications.
