GAIL commissions 1.25-million-tonne PTA plant
GAIL (India) Limited has brought a major polyester raw-material asset into operation through the commissioning of its wholly owned subsidiary GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited’s purified terephthalic acid plant. In its original announcement dated 5 November, the company said the facility at the Mangalore Special Economic Zone in Karnataka has installed capacity of 1.25 million tonnes a year. The development is directly relevant to polyester fibre and yarn manufacturers because PTA is a principal feedstock for their production chain, as well as for PET resin and other polyester-based materials.
The commissioning completes a substantial industrial revival rather than the construction of an entirely new GAIL-originated project. Originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Limited, the plant was acquired by GAIL in 2023 through the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process following National Company Law Tribunal approval of its resolution plan. GAIL describes the subsequent work as an extensive refurbishment and revival exercise involving engineering, technological and operational challenges, supported by technology partners, consultants, contractors and the GMPL team.
The company will market the PTA under its G-Tex brand using its existing marketing network and customer relationships. The site’s proximity to New Mangalore Port, together with dedicated logistics infrastructure, is intended to facilitate movements of incoming raw materials and finished product. GAIL expects the additional domestic manufacturing base to improve PTA availability, reduce import dependence and support downstream polyester growth. These are the company’s stated expectations, not independently measured outcomes following start-up.
For textile purchasing and manufacturing teams, the commercial significance lies in an additional potential domestic feedstock source and the recovery of a previously distressed industrial asset. Installed capacity should not be confused with achieved annual production: the announcement does not establish a sustained operating rate, customer allocation, sale price or supply contract. The next consequential indicators will be reliable operating performance and actual deliveries into the polyester chain. Nevertheless, the commissioning is a concrete upstream capacity milestone with implications extending from chemical procurement to fibre, filament yarn and packaging supply.
