Chinese textile and garment industry enterprises won multiple awards for the 2020 UN Women’s Principles of Empowering Women

On November 18, 2020 , the “2020 International Conference on Gender Equality and Corporate Social Responsibility” hosted by UN Women was held in Beijing. At the meeting, UN Women awarded the “WEPs (Women Empowerment Principles)” awards in China for the first time.

China Textile Information Center won the “WEPs Community and Industry Participation Award” on behalf of the Chinese textile and apparel industry , and the textile and apparel company Hengtian Enterprise from Wuxi City won the “WEPs China Anti-epidemic Action Award.”

On October 1, 2020 , President Xi Jinping pointed out at the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Beijing World Conference on Women: Women are the pioneers of human civilization and the promoters of social progress, and they have written extraordinary achievements in all walks of life.

As a traditional pillar industry in my country and an industry with obvious international competitive advantages, the textile and apparel industry is deeply involved in the integration and development of the global industrial chain. The industry employs more than 20 million people. It is an important civilian production industry, especially providing employment opportunities for a large number of women, which is important for promotion. The status of women and the realization of women’s values ​​have played a supporting role and are the backbone of social stability.

Since 2005, the Social Responsibility Office of the China National Textile and Apparel Council has been committed to promoting the social responsibility and sustainable development of the industry, and paid special attention to the protection and development of the rights and interests of more than 60% of women in the industry. Since 2019, the Social Responsibility Office of the China National Textile and Apparel Council has carried out in-depth cooperation with UN Women , committed to promoting the protection of female employees’ rights and interests at the industry level, and enhancing corporate managers’ awareness of gender equality and human responsibility capacity building. Stimulate female leadership and create an inclusive working environment for women’s economic empowerment, thereby enhancing the core competitiveness of the company’s sustainable development.

Principle of Empowerment to Women

The Principles for the Empowerment of Women (WEPs) are a set of principles developed by UN Women and the UN Global Compact in 2010 to provide companies with guidance on promoting gender equality in the workplace, the market and the community. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the launch of WEPs, the award aims to recognize exemplary business practices that promote gender equality that are consistent with the UN Women and the UN Global Compact “Principles of Empowerment to Women”, and encourage more individuals and businesses to actively promote gender equality. This award is also the first WEPs award in the Asia-Pacific region to recognize exemplary business practices that promote gender equality.

China Textile Information Center

China Textile Information Center (CTIC) is organized by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council and managed by the China Textile Industry Federation.
